Weights and Measures have been with us since humans first learned to walk. Many of these were based on the proportions of the human body or from the land and crops that were vital for existence.
Grain was used as a fundamental measure with three barleycorns placed end to end measuring one inch and 24 barleycorn grains weighing one penny weight.
Nowadays the American system is based on the old British imperial system of national measures that took many Acts of Parliament to achieve standardization. The English though due to inept government and the willingness by said government to give up everything British have had the abomination of the metric system forced upon them.
If we didn’t have standard weights and scales then no one would know what the value of any object would be. Thus we find scales in all aspects of modern life.
In the home the two main uses of scales are bathroom scales and kitchen scales. The one to measure how much we weigh and the other is to weigh the ingredients in our food. Kitchen scales are though the most important and there isn’t a house in the country that doesn’t have at least one set.
Original kitchen scales relied on a system of balancing weights against the product on a fulcrum to obtain equilibrium. These type of scales are now considered to be antique kitchen scales or vintage kitchen scales and are the most part redundant although many houses keep them as ornamental scales as they are very nostalgic.
The next generation of kitchen scales were analogue and still very much in use today where the depression of a spring device causes a pointer to rotate and the weight can be checked against a calibrated scale on the dial.
Today though kitchen scales have entered the digital age with many manufacturers of digital kitchen scales and even talking kitchen scales which have to be the ultimate in decadence.
Kitchen scales have come a long way from the days of the basic fulcrum and the measuring system has developed over centuries such that we all understand pounds and ounces. Unfortunately some of us have also to learn the abomination of the metric system or at least the ability to convert grams back to ounces and kilograms back to pounds, mainly so that we can use those much loved antique scales
